Briefing

A Warning in the Street

Rome, the morning of 15 March, 44 BC. Julius Caesar is walking through a crowded street to a meeting of the Senate. Suddenly an old soothsayer seizes his arm and shouts a warning. Senators and soldiers stop and stare, boys gather round, and a black crow watches from a roof.

Caesar laughs and walks on. Seven puzzles stand between you and the end of his walk. Solve them all, and one last word tells you what was waiting for him.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the street, the crowd and the city, in Latin from Book 1.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven things the crowd does.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, timet ("fears") and clāmat ("shouts"), in the present, imperfect and perfect.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the street, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.

Statim — at once. "The Ides of March have come," Caesar laughed. "Come," said the old man, "but not yet gone." Within the hour, Caesar was dead.
