Deva, the legionary fortress on the River Dee in Britain, about AD 85. Lucius joined the Second Legion as a boy of eighteen. Now, twenty-five years later, he is to be given his honourable discharge, with a cash reward big enough to buy a farm.
His old comrades have gathered in the parade ground to see him go, and boats are waiting on the river. Seven puzzles stand between you and the ceremony. Solve them all, and one last word tells you how Lucius leaves.
Crossword — the legion, the fortress and the farewell, in Latin from Book 3.
Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the farewell.
Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.
Matching — participles: present participles (-ns), perfect passive participles (-tus) and perfect participles of deponent verbs.
Picture Count — reassemble the parade ground, then count what you see.
Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.
Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
Sixteen words from the farewell at Deva. Every clue gives the English meaning; you supply the Latin. Fill the grid — every crossing letter must agree both ways. Eight cells are marked in red: once the grid is solved, their letters unscramble into one more word.
