Briefing

The Night the Earth Shook

Misenum, the morning after his uncle sailed. Seventeen-year-old Pliny has stayed behind with his mother, and is reading Livy. All night the earth has been shaking. Now the carts will not stay still, the sea has drawn back and left its creatures stranded on the sand, and a black cloud split by fire is coming down over the bay.

His mother begs him to run and leave her behind. He refuses. Seven puzzles from his letter to Tacitus stand between you and the end of that terrible day. Solve them all, and one last word tells you how it ended.

SALVUS

Salvus — safe. When the darkness thinned and a real day came back, everything was buried deep in ash, as if in snow. Pliny and his mother went back to Misenum, shaken, but alive and together.
