Briefing

The First Day of January

A Roman family's courtyard on 1 January. By the door stands a statue of Janus, the god with two faces, one looking back at the old year and one forward to the new. The family are giving each other New Year presents of honey bread and letters of good wishes, slaves carry trays, and a peacock struts across the garden.

Everyone is busy, and the cook has a feast to prepare. Seven puzzles stand between you and the New Year dinner. Solve them all, and one last word is everyone's wish for the year ahead.

5

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
