Dido is consumed by love. She leads Aeneas round her walls, begins to speak and stops mid-sentence, and the towers of her new city stand unfinished. Then comes the royal hunt. A storm scatters the riders and hounds, and Dido and the Trojan leader shelter in the same cave, while lightning flashes and the nymphs wail on the mountaintop.
That day is the first cause of death and of disaster. Dido calls it marriage. At once Rumour, the swiftest of evils, races through the cities of Libya. Solve seven puzzles from Book 4, and the last word names what Dido hid behind that name.
Crossword — Dido's city, the hunt and the monster Rumour.
Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the cave and from Rumour.
Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.
Matching — three deponent verbs, loquor, sequor and ingredior, in the present, the perfect and the infinitive.
Picture Count — reassemble the hunt in the storm, then count what you see.
Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.
Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
Nineteen words from the hunt and from Rumour. Every clue gives the English meaning; you supply the Latin. Fill the grid — every crossing letter must agree both ways. Four cells are marked in red: once the grid is solved, their letters unscramble into one more word.
The grid is correct. Unscramble the four red letters:
Seven words from the cave and from Rumour. Unscramble each one.
That's the end of the free taster. The other 5 locks of this room are for Locked Lessons members.

Coniugium vocat, hōc praetexit nōmine culpam: she calls it marriage, and with this name she hides her fault. From that day, Vergil says, came the first cause of death and of disaster.
