Briefing

Stories on the Road

Up on the hill with his grandfather, Philip watches Argus the dog chase a hare, until a wolf comes rushing at them. At home, Myrrhine tells Melissa the story of Theseus and the terrible Minotaur, and then comes the tale of Odysseus and the one-eyed Cyclops.

Now the whole family is on the road to Athens for the great festival. Seven puzzles in Ancient Greek stand between them and the city gates. Solve them all, and one last word names the greatest hero Athens ever had.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the creatures, places and people of the stories, in Greek letters.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the stories.

3

Cipher — decode a message in the Greek alphabet, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs that look passive but are active in meaning, ἔρχομαι ("I come, I go") and βούλομαι ("I want").

5

Picture Count — reassemble the road to Athens, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Typing Greek: use the Greek keyboard that appears at the bottom of the screen, or type on your own keyboard in English letters and they turn into Greek (a→α, b→β, g→γ, d→δ, e→ε, z→ζ, h→η, q→θ, i→ι, k→κ, l→λ, m→μ, n→ν, c→ξ, o→ο, p→π, r→ρ, s→σ, t→τ, u→υ, f→φ, x→χ, y→ψ, w→ω). Accents and breathings are never needed.

Θησεύς

The Hero of Athens

The password was:

ΘΗΣΕΥΣ

Θησεύς — Theseus. The wolf is dead, the Minotaur is slain, Odysseus is safely away from the Cyclops, and the family walks through the gates into Theseus's own city, just in time for the festival.
