Briefing

In the Fields of Mourning

With the Sibyl as his guide, Aeneas walks through the Fields of Mourning and sees Dido, newly dead, among the shadows, like a new moon glimpsed through cloud. He weeps and swears that he left her shore unwillingly. She keeps her eyes on the ground, stands like flint, and turns away to her first husband Sychaeus.

Further on, in Elysium, his father Anchises shows him the souls of Romans still to be born, Caesar Augustus among them, who will bring back the age of gold. Others will work bronze and marble better, he says, but Rome's art is to rule. Solve seven puzzles from Book 6, and the last word names the one he is speaking to.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the Underworld, Dido's shade and Rome's destiny.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from Dido's shade and Anchises' prophecy.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — the future tense, from Anchises' prophecy (excūdent aliī…).

5

Picture Count — reassemble the Underworld, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
