Rome, AD 98. Last year Pliny fell dangerously ill, and the man who nursed him back to health was Harpocras, an Egyptian therapist. Now Trajan is emperor, and Pliny asks him for a favour: Roman citizenship for Harpocras.
But there is a snag. Egyptians had to become citizens of Alexandria first, and Pliny did not know. Seven puzzles from the letters between Pliny and the emperor stand between you and Trajan's reply. Solve them all, and one last word names what Pliny was given.
Crossword — illness, health and citizenship, from Pliny's letters.
Anagrams — unscramble seven words from Pliny's request to the emperor.
Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.
Matching — two verbs, tribuō ("to grant") and rogō ("to ask"), in five tenses.
Picture Count — reassemble the sickroom, then count what you see.
Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.
Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
Fifteen words from illness, health and citizenship. Every clue gives the English meaning; you supply the Latin. Fill the grid — every crossing letter must agree both ways. Seven cells are marked in red: once the grid is solved, their letters unscramble into one more word.
The grid is correct. Unscramble the seven red letters:
Seven words from Pliny's request to the emperor. Unscramble each one.

Grātia — a favour, and thanks. Trajan granted Harpocras his Roman citizenship and, when Pliny explained the difficulty, the citizenship of Alexandria as well, though he said he did not give it lightly. Pliny wrote back to thank him.
