Briefing

A Hunt in the Arena

The Colosseum in Rome, under the emperor Domitian. The arena has been turned into a forest: painted trees rise from the sand, and lions, bears and wild boars roam among them while hunters stalk them. Soldiers with shields guard the emperor's box, and fifty thousand spectators watch.

Domitian has spared no expense. Seven puzzles stand between you and the end of the show. Solve them all, and one last word is what the crowd shouts to the emperor.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the games, the emperor and the arena, in Latin from Book 4.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the games.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, spectō ("watch") and videō ("see"), in the subjunctive after ut ("so that").

5

Picture Count — reassemble the arena, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
