Pompeii, early on a bright morning. Under a shady colonnade by the forum, the schoolmaster is already waiting on his high chair, his scrolls beside him. Boys hurry in with their wax tablets, two girls arrive with their attendants, and the family dog has followed somebody to school.
Today is the first day of the school year, and Quintus has a problem. Seven puzzles stand between you and the end of the lesson. Solve them all, and one last word tells you what every pupil wants to hear.
Crossword — the school, the family and the town, in Latin from Book 1.
Anagrams — unscramble seven things pupils do in class.
Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.
Matching — two verbs from the schoolroom, scrībit ("writes") and audit ("hears"), in the present, imperfect and perfect.
Picture Count — reassemble the schoolroom, then count what you see.
Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.
Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
Fifteen words from school and home. Every clue gives the English meaning; you supply the Latin. Fill the grid — every crossing letter must agree both ways. Seven cells are marked in red: once the grid is solved, their letters unscramble into one more word.
The grid is correct. Unscramble the seven red letters:
