Briefing

Italy Takes Up Arms

King Latinus, old now, has ruled his peaceful cities for a long time. His only heir is his daughter Lavinia, ripe for marriage, and many princes of Latium and Ausonia want her. The handsomest of them all is Turnus, mighty in his ancestors, whom Queen Amata longs to see as her son-in-law.

Now war has come, and the peoples of Italy march out. Turnus towers over them, his helmet crested with a fire-breathing Chimaera. Last comes Camilla of the Volsci, so swift she could skim the tops of the corn without bruising an ear, and the mothers gaze after her. Solve seven puzzles from Book 7, and the last word names the champion of Italy.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the court of Latinus and the armies of Italy.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the muster of the Italians.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — the comparison of adjectives: pulcher, celer and nōbilis.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the muster, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
