Pliny asks his friend Sura whether ghosts are real, and tells him a story. In Athens there was a large, roomy house with a terrible name. In the silence of the night came the sound of iron and the rattle of chains, and then a phantom: a thin, filthy old man with a long beard and wild hair, in shackles. No one would live there.
Then the philosopher Athenodorus came to Athens, read the notice and asked the price. It was suspiciously cheap, so he took it. Seven puzzles stand between you and the end of his first night. Solve them all, and one last word tells you what became of the house.
Crossword — the house, the night and the phantom, from Pliny's letter.
Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the story of the haunted house.
Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.
Matching — three verbs, sum ("to be"), videō ("to see") and audiō ("to hear"), with their present, perfect and future infinitives.
Picture Count — reassemble the philosopher's night, then count what you see.
Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.
Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
Sixteen words from the house, the night and the phantom. Every clue gives the English meaning; you supply the Latin. Fill the grid — every crossing letter must agree both ways. Seven cells are marked in red: once the grid is solved, their letters unscramble into one more word.
The grid is correct. Unscramble the seven red letters:
Seven words from the story of the haunted house. Unscramble each one.

Lībera — free. The bones, still in their chains, were buried at public expense, and once the dead man's spirit had been laid to rest with proper rites, the house was never troubled again.
