Briefing

The Ransom of Rome

390 BC. A Gallish army has burnt Rome. Only the Capitol still holds out, saved one night by the cackling of Juno's sacred geese, but the defenders are starving. The Gauls offer to leave for a thousand pounds of gold, and there is not enough gold in the treasury.

Then the women of Rome bring out their own gold — their rings, necklaces and bracelets — and lay it before the temple. Seven puzzles stand between you and the ransom. Solve them all, and one last word names one of the things the women gave.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the city, the temple and the ransom, in Latin from Book 4.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the ransom.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, dō ("give") and servō ("save"), in the future and future perfect.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the Capitol, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.

Ānulus

A Ring

The password was:

ANULUS

Ānulus — a ring. The women of Rome gave their rings and their gold to pay the Gauls, and the Senate thanked them with a new honour: from then on, Roman women too could be praised in a speech at their funerals.
