Briefing

1 January

Rome, 1 January. Every year on this day the two new consuls took office. Dressed in purple-bordered togas, they rode up to the Capitol with a crowd of senators and horsemen, sacrificed to Jupiter, and swore to serve the Roman people for the year ahead.

The priest is waiting at the temple. Seven puzzles stand between you and the oath. Solve them all, and one last word names what the consuls swore to serve.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — government, the Capitol and the gods, in Latin from Book 4.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the ceremony.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, regō ("rule") and iūrō ("swear"), in the future and future perfect.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the road to the Capitol, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
