Briefing

Painting by Moonlight

Pompeii, the night before the vote. Two sign-painters are up their ladders, painting election slogans in tall red letters on a white wall. Young men hold lanterns for them, dogs sniff about, and the few people still out stop to see what is being written.

By morning the whole town will read it. Seven puzzles stand between you and the finished slogan. Solve them all, and one last word is the message painted on the wall.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the town at night and the election, in Latin from Book 2.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven things that happen in the street at night.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, legit ("reads") and videt ("sees"), in the imperfect, perfect and pluperfect.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the street at night, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
