Briefing

A Long Day in the Field

Dicaeopolis is an Athenian farmer, and today the whole field must be ploughed. The sun is hot, the ox will not move, the plough has hit a great stone, and Xanthias the slave is fast asleep under a tree. Up at the spring, his wife and daughter are filling the water jars, and his son Philip is running across the field with news.

Seven puzzles in Ancient Greek stand between the family and the end of the day. Solve them all, and one last word tells you who has been waiting all day for the festival.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the words of the farm, in Greek letters.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the farm and the household.

3

Cipher — decode a message in the Greek alphabet, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, σπεύδω ("I hurry") and βαίνω ("I go"), in every person.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the farm, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Typing Greek: use the Greek keyboard that appears at the bottom of the screen, or type on your own keyboard in English letters and they turn into Greek (a→α, b→β, g→γ, d→δ, e→ε, z→ζ, h→η, q→θ, i→ι, k→κ, l→λ, m→μ, n→ν, c→ξ, o→ο, p→π, r→ρ, s→σ, t→τ, u→υ, f→φ, x→χ, y→ψ, w→ω). Accents and breathings are never needed.
