Briefing

Did You Hope to Hide It?

Mercury has brought Jupiter's command: Aeneas must leave Carthage and sail for Italy. He orders the fleet made ready in secret, but a lover cannot be deceived. Dido confronts him: "Traitor, did you hope to hide so great a wrong and slip away from my land in silence?" She begs him, by her tears and his right hand, by their marriage, to pity a falling house.

Aeneas, holding Jupiter's warning fast, keeps his eyes still and at last replies. He never made any marriage contract. If the fates allowed it, he would be rebuilding Troy. Solve seven puzzles from their speeches, and the last word is the one his answer ends on.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the queen's reproaches and Aeneas' reply.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from Dido's and Aeneas' speeches.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — commands: imperatives to one person and to several, and nōlī with an infinitive.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the quarrel by the harbour, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.

Sponte

Not of My Own Will

The password was:

SPONTE

Ītaliam nōn sponte sequor: I seek Italy not of my own will. Aeneas ends his reply on those words, and Dido, looking at him sideways, has heard enough.
