The hills of Rome, 21 April. Every year on this day the shepherds kept the festival of their goddess Pales: they cleaned their sheepfolds, decorated altars with garlands, and leaped over small bonfires of straw to make themselves pure. The Romans said that Romulus founded the city on this very day.
The young men are lining up to jump, and the girls have brought garlands. Seven puzzles stand between you and the festival. Solve them all, and one last word names the day itself.
Crossword — festivals, gods and the hills, in Latin from Book 2.
Anagrams — unscramble seven things done at the festival.
Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.
Matching — two verbs, cantō ("sing") and currō ("run"), in the imperfect, perfect and pluperfect.
Picture Count — reassemble the hillside, then count what you see.
Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.
Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.
Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.
Sixteen words from the festival. Every clue gives the English meaning; you supply the Latin. Fill the grid — every crossing letter must agree both ways. Five cells are marked in red: once the grid is solved, their letters unscramble into one more word.
The grid is correct. Unscramble the five red letters:
Seven things done at the festival. Unscramble each one.
