Briefing

Land for the Legions

Northern Italy, 41 BC. The civil wars are over, and tens of thousands of soldiers who fought for Octavian and Antony expect their reward: land of their own. Surveyors mark out fields around towns such as Cremona, and the veterans arrive with their shields, their horses and their families.

For the old soldiers it is a new life; for some farmers who lose their land, among them the young poet Vergil, it is a disaster. Seven puzzles stand between you and the end of the story. Solve them all, and one last word tells you what each old soldier built there.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — the farm, the land and the old soldiers, in Latin from Book 4.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven things done on the new farms.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, dōnō ("present") and accipiō ("receive"), in the future, active and passive.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the fields, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.

VILLAM

Villam — a farmhouse. On his new land each old soldier built a farmhouse and hung up his shield for good. The poet Vergil, whose own family farm is said to have been taken, wrote about the farmers who lost their land in the first of his Eclogues.
