Briefing

Tales of the Great War

The ship carrying Dicaeopolis and Philip to Epidaurus sails past the island of Salamis, and on board the stories of the great war with Persia are told: the Spartans at Thermopylae, the sea battle in the narrows, and the Athenian fleet that went all the way to Egypt.

An oracle had told the Athenians to trust in their "wooden walls". Seven puzzles in Ancient Greek stand between you and the end of the voyage. Solve them all, and one last word names the city those wooden walls saved.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — war, the sea and the battle, in Greek letters.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the stories of the war.

3

Cipher — decode a message in the Greek alphabet, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — three adjectives, ταχύς ("quick"), ἀγαθός ("good") and μέγας ("big"), with their comparatives and superlatives.

5

Picture Count — reassemble the battle of Salamis, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Typing Greek: use the Greek keyboard that appears at the bottom of the screen, or type on your own keyboard in English letters and they turn into Greek (a→α, b→β, g→γ, d→δ, e→ε, z→ζ, h→η, q→θ, i→ι, k→κ, l→λ, m→μ, n→ν, c→ξ, o→ο, p→π, r→ρ, s→σ, t→τ, u→υ, f→φ, x→χ, y→ψ, w→ω). Accents and breathings are never needed.

Ἀθῆναι

The City the Ships Saved

The password was:

ΑΘΗΝΑΙ

Ἀθῆναι — Athens. The oracle's "wooden walls" were the ships: the Athenians trusted their fleet, won at Salamis, and saved their city and all of Greece. Now the ship sails on, and Epidaurus is in sight.
