Briefing

A Son Against Rome

488 BC. Gnaeus Marcius Coriolanus, once a Roman hero, has been driven into exile by the people of Rome. Now he leads the army of the Volsci against his own city, and his camp stands just five miles from the walls. The Romans send ambassadors, then priests, and he turns them all away.

At last the women of Rome go out to the camp: his mother Veturia, his wife Volumnia and his two small children. Seven puzzles stand between you and Coriolanus' decision. Solve them all, and one last word is what his mother said.

How To Play

Seven Locks

1

Crossword — war, the camp and the family, in Latin from Book 3.

2

Anagrams — unscramble seven words from the meeting at the camp.

3

Cipher — decode a message in Latin, then answer the riddle it asks.

4

Matching — two verbs, ōrō ("beg") and vincō ("conquer"), in the imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive, as they appear after cum ("when").

5

Picture Count — reassemble the camp, then count what you see.

6

Odd One Out — find the word that doesn't belong in each row to build the story, then answer questions about it.

7

Final Rebus — one clue from every lock. Their first letters spell the final word.

Every answer box checks itself. Spelling and capitals are forgiving, and macrons are never needed.

Precor

I Beg You

The password was:

PRECOR

Precor — I beg you. Veturia did not beg quietly at first. “Am I here as your mother or as your prisoner?” she asked. Then the women wept and pleaded, and Coriolanus embraced his family and led the army away. Rome built a temple to the Fortune of Women where they had stood.
