The wood of those who took their own lives and the Harpies, Pier delle Vigne, the spendthrifts hunted by hounds, the burning sand and Capaneus, the Old Man of Crete and the rivers of hell, Dante's meeting with his old teacher, the three Florentines, and the flight down on Geryon.
- Cantos 18–23: The Evil Ditches. Malebolge and its ditches, the seducers whipped by devils, the churchmen who sold holy things, the seers with their heads turned backwards and the story of Mantua, the grafters and the devils with hooks, the trick of the sinner from Navarre, the escape, and the hypocrites in their heavy cloaks.

The hard climb out, the thieves and the serpents, Vanni Fucci and the centaur Cacus, the strange changes of shape, Ulysses and Diomedes in one flame and Ulysses' last voyage, Guido da Montefeltro and the pope's false pardon, the sowers of discord, and the falsifiers in the last ditch.
- Cantos 30–34: The Frozen Lake. The falsifiers and the quarrel of Master Adam and Sinon, the giants round the pit, the frozen lake of Cocytus and its zones for traitors, Count Ugolino and the archbishop, Fra Alberigo, Lucifer with his three faces, and the climb out to see the stars.
